Instagram Notifies Verified Users of Security Breach

Instagram on Wednesday sent security notices to all verified account holders, including PCMag, about a breach targeting "high-profile users."

The photo and video-sharing app said it "recently discovered that one or more individuals obtained unlawful access to a number of high-profile Instagram users' contact information." The perpetrators exploited a bug in an Instagram API to gain access to user's email addresses and phone numbers. Fortunately, the hackers did not access any account passwords.

"Our main concern is for the safety of our community and, out of an abundance of caution, we are reaching out to all verified accounts," the company wrote. "At this point we believe this effort was targeted at high-profile users."
